Hello World,

This is my first post on Tom's Hardware. I am 16, and I want to build my an editing PC. I have done a lot of research and I kind of know what I want. I will be using After Effects, Premier, 3D, and some gaming. I am a very indecisive person so I was looking for suggestions or comments to improve my build. I would like to keep the price around $900 or lower.

Here are the parts:

PCPartPicker part list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/2I9cl

CPU: AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core Processor ($189.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock 980DE3/U3S3 ATX AM3+ Motherboard ($69.99 @ Microcenter)
Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($134.95 @ Amazon)
Storage: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($86.47 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($249.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 500W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($34.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer ($15.99 @ Microcenter)
Other: My Friend's Case ($12.00)
Total: $864.36

Thanks,

Avery

I recommend a larger power supply, somewhere in the 700 range and you should get 2 hdds and run a raid stripe or you may have problems editing large/HD files. Drop your video card down to a 5 or 600 series Nvidia to retain the mercury engine support for the Adobe products, and save on cash.

Looks good. Most editing software can take advantage of NVidia CUDA cores for extra rendering power and they love extra cores.

I would look at a better case, a better CPU cooler and some fans. Even a cheap, big case with lots of space, some fans and a Hyper Evo 212 cooler will help a lot. The 8350 can run hot and doing lots of rendering is going to have heat building up around the cpu, ram, gpu, hard drives and shorten the life of everything. The Hyper Evo is like 20-$25, some fans can be had for like $3-5 a piece and depdning on how big your friends case is, you may need a bigger one although a bigger cheap case can be had for like $30.

Some people don't like the CX PSU line. I think some of it goes back to 1 guy posted pics of one that blew up years ago, and now anytime a CX is put a build, a bunch of people who never used one chime in saying it's utter crap, it will blow up on you, without ever having one, or one blow up on them. I would be more concerned with the wattage. 500w is probably a bit low for that GPU and CPU. The CPU uses 125w alone in normal mode, any turbo cores or overclocking, it goes up even higher.

FYI, my CX 600 hasn't blown up and powers my OC'd 7870 and my 8320 at 4.6ghz fine

Pretty solid build. Why just a 500w psu. Are you not going to sli. Also I dont think you need 2tb but if you want to, you can get it. Otherwise pretty solid build.

Okay I will go 600w. What about my mobo? I am a bit skeptical.

I think the motherboard is good. Also, I would get the 8320 instead of the 8350 and get a better motherboard with the saved money

Also for the psu, if your not going to sli, stick with 500w. MAKE SURE YOU GET A SEMI OR FULLY MODULAR PSU

The board board in my sig I found to be a good one for the price. I had a 970 chipset and wasn't happy with it.

Yea, go with the 4670k (currently same price as 4670 in US) instead of any FX processor. If you can afford it, get an SSD, but if not, stick to your intended 2TB HDD, because you will need it if it's an editing computer. I would also recommend the board that whitecat mentioned. Finally, stick to your GPU, Optical Drive, RAM and PSU, they're all prety much the best for the price. Also, make sure your friend's case will support your components. Do you know which one it is?

Exactly that ^^^ Except the 4670k is the exact same price right now, so get that one instead of the 4670.

No I don't know what case it is but I looked at it and it was a good case. I was stuck on amd for a while. Are you sure an lower core lower clock speed intel would be better for editing. By the way I am not planning to overclock.

Avery I am an AMD fanboy. As much as I hate to admit it Intel is better for video editing rendering and the like. So I do believe that it will be better. Although I wish the AMD option was better :(

Do you have any links on that. I really was starting to like AMD. How about the quad core vs 8 core difference?

Does not really matter avery. The issue is that most software will not use more then 4 cores or so.

For me the only reason is if your streaming. Streaming is infinetly better with AMD. Every core is used. The more physical cores youhave the better. Also makes the build cheaper. For instance though with AMD you can get away with an fx6300 to stream. For intel you pretty much have to have a decent i7 for 1080p.

Like I said though. As much as I want AMD to rule the CPU market. For rendering and stuff thats less number core dependant and just single core dependant meaning how good the actual core is Intel will be better. I dont personally render or anything though. I mean you can google it. Some people say its fine some people say it is not. Depends on what you have for a budget it seems.
