I know its caused by hibernate being disabled because when I enable it it shuts down just fine.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I don't want to have the hibernate file that takes up 10+ GB on my hard drive when I never use it.

Windows 7 64-bit OS

Try to clear your CMOS (see motherboard manual).

You may have to go back into your BIOS to fix any changes you required, but do that after you confirm if the problem is fixed.

When you SHUTDOWN your computer then Windows should have nothing to do with it. Something on the motherboard is thus triggering the system to restart.
I see two possibilities, either in Windows under Power features is set that whenever you turn off your computer should hibernate instead of really powering off (Control Panel -> Power Features -> Choose behavior of power buttons), or even in "Advanced Energy plan configuration" inside Power Features.

Or it's something in BIOS/UEFI settings, since you can also modify the behavior of your pc regarding powering on/off etc.

I checked that and it is set to shutdown. I also made sure there was nothing set to wake up the computer because some of the other threads I had read said that that caused there problem and nothing works. Everything works fine but when hibernate is disabled it will shutdown then immediately restart.

I have checked the first possibility that you mention and when I go into my BIOS settings i can't find anything directly about power up. Maybe you would know a little more about that I have an Asus z87-a motherboard so I'm using the Asus BIOS utility

I rarely shut down. I use sleep to the S3 sleep state which enters a low power state that only holds the ram data. sleep/wake takes only a few seconds.
S3 is selected in the bios. If you mean sleep/suspend without a hiberfile, windows will want to keep ram active, and you need to enable that.

One gotcha... The hiberfile is hard to get rid of, if you have ever used it. The space will still be there, even if you turn hibernation off. It is more of an issue with a small ssd vs. a hard drive. Some google work will show you how to get rid of it.

The file gets removed as soon as i disable hibernate. My SSD gains like 10.5GB but then it casues the issue when I shut down. No problems with removing the file its just for some reason when i shut it down it restarts instead.
