Computer won't turn on with two ram sticks

My laptop (HP Pavillion DV6) quit on me last night. It turned on, but there was nothing on screen. I plugged a monitor into it, and still nothing. After researching the problem on another computer, I took out both memory chips, plugged them back in, and it still wouldn't work. I decided to just plug one in, and not both, and now it seems to run fine.

Anyone know what the problem could be? I'm glad it's working, but with only one memory chip, games don't run very well. I don't want to go out and buy a new chip only to find out that it was something else all along.

Solution
ok for reference I have a hp dv6-6335dx with amd 3500. I did a test on my computer it didn't matter which slot the memory was installed into as long as one was installed. so if you have an amd system I would say your slot is failed too. if it is an intel I dont know for sure. intel would have different memory controller so it could act different.

if you can carefully look at the one slot and see if any pins look broken or mabe dirt in it. If its dirty try blowing it out. other then that I dont have any recommendations unless you want to just get a single stick that is bigger (like a single 8gb if your computer supports it)and put it in the one slot that works.

best of luck
1. most likely---if you take the one out and put the other in the same slot does it work? if it doesn't means that one memory stick is bad

2. less likely---if it works then take it and put it in the second slot (still only one stick in) does it work? if it doesn't then most likely that memory slot may have failed

Okay so there's a top slot, and a bottom slot. Currently, the first chip is in the bottom slot. And that works. Computer runs fine and all. So I just now tried taking it out and put it in the top slot, and the computer started beeping like hell when I turned it on :S I took that first chip out, and put the second chip in the bottom slot, and the same problem occurred (nothing on screen)

Could it be possible both the second chip and top slot are fried?

Sorry if that seems confusing haha I tried typing it as best as I could. Basically, chip A works in one slot, not the other. Chip B won't work in either.

well I would say that chip B is failed for sure.

because motherboard very you may have a motherboard that need one ram in the first slot before it trys using the second. because of that till you have two known good rams you wont be able to say for sure if the second slot is bad or not.

just wondering did you count the beeps pattern?
what is your dv6 model number? or is it an intel or amd cpu?

Yep, it's an AMD A6-3410 MX. No dirt or broken sticks. What would cause it to suddenly fail like that? My computer does overheat big time. I think I'm going to have to buy a larger memory stick for the one slot then. I'd assume getting the slot replaced is way more expensive than that. Know a place that sells them cheap online? I'd like to be back up to 4 GIGs of memory.

And no I didn't count the beeps. Not quite sure I want to recreate that scenario as my education depends on this laptop. I'm afraid to break something else lol

Thanks so much for all your help! :)

the cause could have been any number of factors from an electrical surge, to heat damaged something. if you do get another stick of ram put the new one in the slot that works. make sure computer starts up with it. then power it down and install the old working stick in the second slot. mabe you could get lucky and both would work. and you would have the extra ram as a benefit.

glad I helped and best of luck.
