Transferring Windows 8.1 OEM to new motherboard, is this possible?

First you will have to talk with a Microsoft rep.

The OEM licence says OEM stay with the original Motherboard.

The good news is, if you are polite, and give them a sob story about how your piece of crap motherboard died, and you would like to replace it.
Not a sure thing, but I have heard plenty of stories, that it worked

You will be able to do the install notmaly, with the Key, but it won't validate.

Not sure what you mean by:"Or do I have to wipe it off the normal HDD somehow"

So I have to talk to someone at microsoft? I thought OEM meant that you couldn't talk to microsoft support?

They are not going to support you, that is for sure.

This is Licensing, NOT Support.

I haven't had it come up for a long time, but the last time it did, when it fails to validate, a phone number comes up on the screen.
Good luck!

Edit

As I remember the phone number comes up ahead of validation also, to give you the option of validating by phone.

Will it always fail or will it fail after a certain number of times used?

It will fail the first time, and every time, unless you type in the new code the Microsoft rep will give you.

Again, I haven't had to do this since early XP.
Mine failed because I had faulty memory, and tried to install it too many times, like 10. Same mother board though!

Windows 8 OEM is fully transferrable->

Q. I am not a system builder, but I am building my own PC for personal use. Can I purchase OEM System Builder software?

A. Yes. Anyone who is building a PC for personal use with Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro software can use the Personal Use License.

Q. What happens if I build a PC with a Personal Use License, then later decide to sell it?

A. You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

Would this require me to talk to microsoft? License is the product key, right? So normal installation? Thanks!
