PC not entering sleep mode

Hi,
I have been unable to get my PC to enter sleep mode without pressing the sleep button.
I have set up the screen saver and then display to sleep, that works fine. But, the PC just doesn't go to sleep or shut down as instructed!
I had a store bought PC, an ASUS essentio with a P8H61-M pro mobo and a toshiba 1Tb HDD, 16GB RAM, win 8 and GT 630.
The PC was then upgraded with an ASUS P8Z77-M Pro mobo, added 2 SSD's (intel 520 series and Samsung 840 pro), re-used original HDD, upgraded to GTX 660, kept original 16 Gb RAM, and upgraded to win 8.1.
Since then the PC just won't sleep or shut down when not in use.
I have tried everything (basic) with power management, screen saver, "choose when the computer sleeps", "turn off hard disk after.." ect, but nothing seems to work.
I'm just feeling very dumb right now, cause it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to make a PC go to sleep.
Any help would be very appreciated,

My first guess is that there is an application that is running that is instructing the PC not to enter sleep mode.

Check what is booting up using 'msconfig' and look over the services that are running. Don't mess with the services if you aren't sure what you are doing as you may create nightmares months later when other things don't work and you don't know why. :)

I practically don't have any 3rd party software beside win 8.1, webroot anti virus and ASUS software that came with the mobo.
So I really don't know what services would keep the PC from going into sleep mode?
Any idea?

Alright,
I think I figured out the issue!
First I tried disabling/stopping different applications/processes without any success.
Then, I disconnected my ethernet connection and the PC finally went into sleep mode as instructed.
I went into the device manager and opened the network adapter, the box for "allow this device to wake the computer" was already unchecked.
So, it seems like my internet is preventing my PC from going into sleep mode, but I don't know how to fix that except by disconnecting my LAN cable.
The crazy thing is my wife's PC, another ASUS, does not present with this issue. It's connected to the same home network.

It looks like you're on the right path. See under the device settings if you have "wake on lan" enabled. Besides that check box which you want unchecked there could be some software running that supports the waking on lan activity. It might be a driver setting or ? Perhaps there is some proprietary software for the MOBO that is installed controlling this feature along with the standard windows.

Look at the "device manager" and the network adapter for clues. Also, "services". Perhaps an email to ASUS support is in order since you now know that the network connection is keeping your PC from sleeping, if you can't find anything else out.
