Can I run ddr3-2400 without overclocking

Alright, not quite end of. Clocking ram and cpu will both cause heat in the cpu die. Overclocking ram will benefit nothing in games, and tradesman can tell you the rest when he is on.
I CAN tell you, overxclocking ram is exhorbitantly expensive for the gains.

2400 is good and with your CPU, if it's a strong ong one, might not have to OC the CPU at all, if average, can prob just go to 4 GHz which shouldn't really be any more than changing the multiplier (i.e. no hunting around and changing voltages here and there) - 2400 will possibly give you up to 3 or so FPS in gaming, but true value shows in regular computing, multi-tasking, imaging, video, VMs, CAD, et al
