Hello World,

I am 16, and I want to build my an editing PC. I kind of know what I want except the CPU/Motherboard. I will be using After Effects, Premier, 3D, and some gaming. I would like to keep the price around $900 or lower. The biggest problem I am facing is choosing between Intel or AMD. I think the best from each for price to performance is the i5 4670k and the FX 8350. What are the pros/cons of each or any suggestions?

Here's the list of my other parts:

Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($134.95 @ B&H)
Storage: Kingston SSDNow V300 Series 120GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($69.99 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($86.47 @ OutletPC)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($249.99 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Corsair CX 600W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($59.99 @ NCIX US)
Optical Drive: LG GH24NSB0 DVD/CD Writer ($15.99 @ Microcenter)
Other: My Friend's Case ($12.00)

Thanks,

Avery

Solution
i5 4670k = 3.4/3.8ghz x 4 with 6MB L3 cache
1230v3 = 3.3/3.7ghz x 4 with 8MB L3 cache and hyperthreading

The i5 + Z87 motherboard is almost the exact same price as the Xeon + H87 motherboard.

i5 pros - 100mhz faster at stock speeds, overclockable
i5 cons - more expensive, overclocking requires an aftermarket cooler and will then use up to 100% more power, only 4 threads

Xeon pros - more L3 cache, twice as many threads, runs cooler, has many more instruction sets
Xeon cons - cannot be overclocked, 100mhz slower, no igpu

First off, don't get that kingston SSD. The firmware the new ones ship with causes them to read and write at horrible speeds, hence the price drops. Get the Samsung EVO 840 instead. Do you want to overclock the CPU you will get?

From the research that I have done are this. Anyone can add to this too.

i5-4670k
Pros:
Faster per core then the FX 8350
Better for gaming in most games on the market
lower watts @ 84 = save money on electric bill

FX 8350
Pros:
8 Cores = better for mulit tasking
More l3 cache 8mb better multi tasking

In my opinion I would get the i5 but if you are going to do video editing/streaming/photoshop ect. lots of muti tasking maybe the amd would be best

But do you think that 20 seconds less is worth $100?

Did I say it was for everyone? I myself decided it was worth the extra $100 when I bought my 3770K and I've got no regrets.

Yeah i agree with you. Really depends what you will use the cpu for.
i7 has hyper-threading slightly better editing and rendering ect - $340
i5 no hyper-threading - $220 Is the extra $120 worth, not sure.

If he asked for a $900 gaming PC I would have said i5 4670k all the way, but he asked for a $900 editing PC. For that the i5 is no match for an i7. He would have to scrap the ssd to afford an actual i7, and that is why I recommend the Xeon. It is essentially an i7 4770 with integrated graphics disabled. It is a much better value for his needs at the same cost as the i5. It offers hyperthreading, more L3 cache, and less power consumption. He would end up spending less by not having to get a Z87 mobo and and aftermarket cooler.

I don't really know much about Xeons or Intel but I am willing to try it. I am just looking for something that works well with after effects , and has the best cost to performance ratio.
