It is often caused by the hard drive developing a fault, it which case you will need to buy a new hard drive.
Test the drive with SeaTools to see if it is faulty: http://www.seagate.com/gb/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/
To avoid losing data you should never save it just on one hard drive. At least two hard drives should be used for saving important data.
