There is a computer on a ship, that runs a special application that controls the loads from the ship. The computer communicates via the motherboard's serial port to the sensor management unit that controls the loads.

My question is, that if I want to change this computer cause hardware failure, having the old hard disk drive. What I have to check to have 100% compatibility with new motherboard's serial port connection with sensor management unit?

Does the serial port works with the basic drivers etc?

If you want to change whole package except of HDD you would need to reinstall the OS, its almost impossible to do a major upgrade within the old Windows XP. I'm guessing except of XP there is some additional software installed to do the job so without installers and proper knowledge how to set it up, its very risky idea.

If the software don't use any dedicated drivers for the motherboard (which is quite unlikely) there should be no problem with serial ports, it most probably uses build in windows drivers. Again the problem could be reconfiguration the software to use proper COM ports mapped to the physical connector, etc.

In the past I had transfered SATA drives from destroyed computer to another one and it worked. It had some problems with graphics and sound drivers but everything other was fine. The main question is about the serial port. If the serial port (after installing the drivers if needed, can communicate properly). I cannot reinstall the OS cause I don't have the installation files from the special application that controls the sensors.
