Hi all, long, LONG time lurker who needs a little help.

I've been offered near identical machines but with very different processors/motherboards. For reference, I play quite a few games and do quite a bit of database crunching.

Chips are:
Xeon E5420
i7
E5520

I've also been offered the E5520 and E5420 in pairs too - so two CPUs on the motherboard.

The i7 is the most expensive of all offered but I'm wondering how much of a difference this would have over a dual CPU Xeon E5420 for example?

Any advice really appreciated.

The i7-4701EQ is 3 generations newer. Although it is not a Xeon, it will outperform the 2 models you mentioned. Dual CPU scaling is very inconsistent phenomena. Even in the same software, but running different projects, you can get massive differences.
