I was recently hacked. I want to completely reformat my hard drive but can't. I"ve tried reinstalled windows XP Pro - using a CD with startup set to CD in bios. It defaults to the hard drive and won't let me. I get tons of errors.

I can boot up using a dos disk, but I don't have a format command on it. I don't know if it's possible to destroy a motherboard with a virus, but I've tried everything. something is not allowing me to run cd rescue disks to eliminate virus's. booting into windows works on one of the drives, but once in - I can't do anything. can't move icons, can't send files to USB or floppy.

I think this virus is on our network, so I can't shut down any systems.

If I reformat the hard drive on the primary infected drive - perhaps I can install either WIN XP again or Win7 (I have a new full install disk of Win 7)

I've been working on this non stop since last Friday. I"m at my wits end at this point. it seems that the only way to proceed is by using a floppy with the correct files. not sure where those are on this system (also Win XP Pro). I did a directory search on this drive and found the first directory entry to be really strange. name: 32788r22fwjfw contained what I thought were suspicious files. I took a screenshot of the files if someone thinks that might help.

thanks!

I agree with DeathAndPain, I didn't heat that virus burn itself into BIOS. You can download Kaspersky rescue cd, burn it, boot from it and update/scan for viruses before you reinstall win, described by DeathAndPain. If scanning don't give results then do new install.
Good luck.

You can make a bootable USB stick by downloading Rufus. But I believe you are making the second step before the first.

If your mainboard is indeed faulty, all reinstalling of he world will not help you. Viruses that burn themselves to the BIOS are possible, though I hardly ever heard of any actually existing ones. For that reason, I consider the likelihood that you got a virus in your BIOS as low, albeit not impossible.

So if necessary the first step needs to be fixing your hardware. If you assume that your hardware is okay, and only the files on your hard disk are the problem, you can use the XP Pro boot CD to boot into Windows Setup. Note that you need to press space at the beginning of the booting sequence (when a primitive text message prompts you to do so in order to boot from the CD. This is a precaution in case you reboot your machine and forgot the CD in the drive. If you do not press SPACE within a few seconds, the system will boot from hard disk anyway.)

In setup make sure to use the extended functions to delete all partitions on your hard disk before reinstalling. Reinstalling Windows over the already-existing files is a mess, and I can see you not being satisfied with the result.

I may have gotten to the virus but not sure. ran ESET. it found 12 . System seems to be somewhat OK even though some of the file associations are goofed up. ie: I can click on a Word file and it will open in Word, but I can't access Word from the program files. Not sure where the exe file is for the program and how to re-associate it.

I think I will take the advice of creating additional boot rescue CD. hopefully that will work.

thanks again to all.
