what are the compatible cpu's I can buy to upgrade my system?

so far, i have a core i3 2100 3.1ghz cpu, lga 1155 socket, sandy bridge, can i go higher say up to core i7 and what speed and type?

Yea i still cant find anything. o well. I just got a R9 290x GPU and was wondering if it would be too powerful for my pc. i3 2100 3.1ghz cpu
8gb ram
I think it would over power the cpu??

P.S I user my PC for gaming. :)
