Hello,

I recently got a new machine with a Silverstone SST-ST85F-GS - 850W PSU.

The PS U runs great expect in 3D Marks, during the first test. Regardless of my GPUs overclocking, it whines a lot!

I can send it back now for 5 pounds and get a refund. Should I, while I still can? The whine is limited during that test. I mainly wonder for later on, if I add a 2nd 290X if it will whine due to the increase load.

Edit: Forgot to add, I tried a bit of mining, out of curiosity and my machine restarts after a bit even at stock settings. I believe this is a gpu and not a psu issue.

More about : psu coil whine marks 290x

Try the GPU on another system to test, and try another PSU in your system if you can. It looks like the PSU is faulty.

Unfortunately I do not have another GPU nor PSU, thus RMAing it will leave me without a machine.

Other than 3D Mark's first level, it doesn't do it. I tried Unigine Valley & Heaven, ARMA III and Far Cry 3. Everything runs on ultra, just fine without any whining. Even 3D Mark's 2nd and 3rd parts, which supposed to stress the system more, do not do this coil whine!

First make sure the source of the whine, is it GPU or PSU ? In normal circumstances a good component doesn't whine, so its somewhat worrying. But it also depends on luck some components whine and still last for years some don't. So try to figure out the whining, then you could RMA the component.

I am 99.9% it is the PSU. I had a quick search online and it appears that I am not the only one with a whine on that test! I am hesitate to return it, as I heard horror stories about Scan's RMA support and they charge for refunds.

I will try to bargain with Scan, to send it off next month when I am on holidays or try to borrow one in the meantime.
