So one of my friends said that he built a computer for gaming, realized his family internet wasn't good enough so bought a "Netgear". I know they do wifi stuff but is it a buy-router-get-internet- forever or is it like BT where you pay a month? Please help I'm really confused

A router will simply share the same connection and might even make it a little slower because it's another piece of circutry involved. If he wants a separate connection he has to contact his ISP, if he just wants extra ports for other devices, then he probably bought a Switch. If we're talking about wifi, then yes that's how it can work, you can just buy a Netgear access point and connect that to a router and get wireless access.
