So I have an old external HDD with very valuable and sentimental pictures from my family holiday to Australia on it. I believed the port on it for the USB connector had broken so I attempted to connect it direct to my PC's motherboard by opening it up and attaching it via sata cable and a PSU connector. However when I did this my PC would not turn on and I don't know why. I have had 2 internal HDD's plugged in before and it loads fine. Any help greatly appreciated.

P.S When I press my PC's power button, the fan LED and other LED's light up for a second and then it cuts out.

It`s usually a a sign that the actual drive has developed an electrical fault.

The Psu unit will detect this, through a set of protection circuits built into it.
If removing the drive and the system works normally it confirms the drive or circuits of the drive are indeed damaged. Sorry to say. And why it causes the Psu to shut down.

Is there any way to get the data off it??

They are a bit hard to diagnose, in some cases it can be down to just the circuit board of the actual hard drive and can be replaced.

In others it can be a more physical or mechanical problem like the drive motor that spins the disk platter has burned out.

Try disconnecting one of the other two hard drives in the system.
The one used as data storage.

It may be the case that by adding another HD you may of just gone slightly over the power output of the psu.

ie too much load on it, so it refuses to power up as a safety.feature. Depending on the wattage of the actual Psu. Run the boot drive and the drive you wish to get the data off see if the system powers up like that.

You may also want to pick up a Hard drive USB adaptor they shouldn't be more than $20. Boot up your PC and see if you can plug it in like a usb drive. If that doesn't work may have to go with a data recovery vender but those are $$.
