Hi people.

The power supply on my Dell XPS 400 died. I need to replace it ASAP, but the fastest I can get one is 3 days (ebay). I drove to Frys Electronics and they had a 500w power that sort of fits into my case and had all the connectors I needed. I asked the Rep in charge of the area for help. He told me that it didn't matter at all how much MORE wattage the PSU had, only if it had less... This was a very young man, he looked 12 to me, and didn't really seem to care. So I ask the combined wisdom of Tom's Hardware forums readers:

Will this larger 500w PSU damage anything in the computer?

There's no link or mention of a PSU model.

But generally, amps matter more than total advertised wattage. Frys has decent PSUs, if you can find one from XFX/SeaSonic/Corsair, you're good to go. Antec would also be another choice, EVGA last on the list.

Don't worry about having too much power in a power supply. Think of the power supply as the engine of your computer the bigger engine doesn't hurt your car it just helps you carry more and reach your desired speed faster.

The brand I've had the most luck with is Thermaltake. Antec, Corsair, Enermax, Seasonic, and XFX are considered good brands. You can also check out the website Johny Lucky Power Supply Recomendations.
