So I bought a 50 foot ethernet cable four months ago and it has been working fine. Just today my wired connection with my desktop stopped working for no reason. I didn't bump it and I've only taken it in and out of the ethernet port a few times.

Windows 8.1 says, "A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken" but I'm using the cable right now with my laptop; it works fine.

Online it told me to do this: Control Panel>System properties>device manager>network adapter>realtek PCIe GBE family controller

"The device is working properly."

1. So is it the ethernet port? My computer says it is working and aren't they hard to break? My desktop obviously hasn't fallen since it is on the ground and I've only taken the ethernet cable out of the port a few times, not yanking it out or anything. The cable clicks into place and the light flashes like it normally does.

2. The network is fine since I'm using it right now with my laptop. What do you guys recommend?

3. I prefer the wired connections but the big 50 foot cable snakes through our apartment so it is kind of a hassle. Is there a big difference between the 32 dollar TP-Link N600 300mbps and the 43 dollar TP-link N900 450mbps? I only have two games I play, WOT and metro last light but I still prefer wired for the reliability when using the internet or playing games. The only other thing I do is do skype chats so obviously I don't want interruptions.

4. My mobo is an Asus M5 A97 LE R2.0 and has an open PCI express slot. I think it would fit with Asus HD 7850 1gb video card in the PCI express slot above the open slot. But the antennas give me pause.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Sorry, I know you guys get this stupid questions but I couldn't find the answer online. I'm assuming that there is something wrong with the ethernet port but I don't understand how anything could have happened to it since I have been gentle with it and I haven't bumped my computer at all. Any help or advice would be great.

Seems like you have a problem with the port, it is not because of cable since it is working fine on your other computer. Try to get a replacement of mobo else you can get a NIC card and use it for internet connection. Its better to replace the mobo instead of having a faulty one and compromise yourself

Should I really replace the motherboard? It cost me 65 bucks with the mail in rebate and I've used this computer for just one month.

1. Stupid question: why does it say "everything is working fine" on my computer for the network adapter? Is it just mistaken?

2. The wireless card is 32 dollars and a USB to ethernet cable is 15-20 bucks. Are wireless adapter cards that bad? It would be nice not having a 50 foot cable going through my apartment, but I like the reliability of the wired connection and security.

3. Is there a way to really tell if an ethernet port is damaged?

4. If the ethernet port is damaged would that really mean that the other parts are damaged? I could just return it but I don't think it's worth it for shipping and time without computer, not to mention the time putting things together again.

Wireless are good but wired are more reliable, if you are getting internet from good ISP you will not have that much drops in the line. If the light doesn't glow on the ethernet port when you plug in cable, it indicates that its not working. If it is a new mobo, you can probably try to get a replacement from the vendor, warranty is not void unless you have done a physical damage to the mobo
