Server Build Advice

Ok so i'm planning to build a home server for when i move to my new house in March 21st. I'll have to wire the whole house in STP CAT 6 cables and thought that i might as well wire it all together to a home server. Now i like the way that the HP Microserver looks so a case similar to that in size would be nice. Also having the system below 40db on full load.

I have £500 max budget and no more :)

I was thinking of using Western Digital 2TB HD's as its going to be 24/7

Since i want to have the capabilities to stream via XBMC but also use it as a file server/back up partitions (already have acronis for backup)

Still i'm not entirely sure on how to stream to all devices on the network like XBMC and give certain devices permissions to use certain hard drive partitions. SO really its like mixing freeNAS and XBMC which is why Ubuntu seems like the appropriate choice.

(Note: I'll eventually want to connect all TV's to use the 'XBMC/HTPC part' of the system via some sort of dongle, http://www.techhive.com/product/1252677/roku-3.html is an example) Or another way that exists.

So this is what it would be like in the near future:
All devices such as Laptops and desktops are able to use the server to stream movies/music, are able to share files and be backed up across the network. I can control the server from my main desktop pc from a software which YOU will suggest and can use acronis to backup their data incrementally to a designated partition. (I know how to setup the acronis back etc fine) Also do a little game hosting but not too intensive, maybe something like source engine games would be the max.

So if someone who really knows what they're doing and want to help me please reply.

I went with Microsoft Windows 7 for my network because I wanted to stream Live TV with a Cable Card (get rid of all cable boxes). For hardware, the thing I have found is you want the following:

At least 1.5GB RAM per concurrent stream + RAM for the OS. Assuming 2GB RAM for the OS, and 4 concurrent streams, you would want 8GB RAM (1.5GB X 4 + 2GB).

At least 1 processing core/thread per stream + overhead for the OS. For 4 concurrent streams, you would want at least a quad core CPU.

For disks - 7200RPM SATA III drives will support up to 6 concurrent HD video streams.

I much prefer the XMBC for streaming options - too bad they don't do the live TV like WMC....

Could you elaborate more, and answer some of the other questions ?

Ok so do you think that i should install Windows 7 to a small HD (i get OS's free from college) and use VMware to run freeNAS and XBMC on the same computer ?

Or us VMware vSphere Hyperviser instead of Windows 7 ? (Although i can't really use remote access as i hate cmd line type things which is what vSphere uses for remote access)

Also how would other devices connect to the XBMC server ?

Although I haven't used XMBC server, I understand they have "clients" for different devices. The reason I went with Windows Media Center (WMC), was the live TV option for a cable card (digital cable). I replaced the cable boxes in my home with an HTPC and XBox360 extenders. Nothing out there is going to be a "perfect" setup....be prepared to do a lot of playing around with things.

XBMC runs on windows - but my understanding is it works better on Linux....

If you aren't doing the live cable TV (digital cable) - go with XBMC....And I believe the Ubuntu Server choice would give you the shares needed and run XBMC better.

Cheers, i'll probably use XBMC with plex plugin or just plex. Also you can use live tv for XBMC, just install on of the many plguins.

I also looked into serviio, i might just try a few different configurations and see what i like nearer the time. Oh and btw this is the build that i came up with (Note: i already have hard drives, switch, patch panel, cables, OS (get the free from college) and all other peripherals needed)

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/user/lewisg743/saved/3zhB

I went with the single 8gb RAM so that i can easily buy another (exact same chip) once i get more money :p

Let me know what you think thanks.

8GB RAM should be plenty for any HTPC use - unless you are into advanced video editing....I run 8GB RAM on Windows 7 and WMC, and never utilize more than 60% of the memory, event when recording 3 HD streams and watching a 4th HD stream - it actually tasks my hard drive (SATA III WD Black) the most (90-95%).

Before I got rid of my cable boxes, I built the HTPC and tested for a month, utilizing several configurations before I decided on the final hardware/software combo. When you get rid of the boxes, and the wife can't watch her shows, you are in some deep trouble....LOL.

Keep in mind it will be doing some light game hosting as well, so on full load the 16GB is needed (especially if i decide to do some virtual machines)
