Retention Plate Won't Fit on standoff screws on mobo

the cpu heatsink is hyper 212 EVO and when i tried to put my retention plate on it won't even reach it. I installed the backplate correctly but for some reason it won't reach it! the cpu is an am3+ btw
PS first time ever building a pc
im really sorry if i didnt give enough information but im so frustrated!

Did you remove the original backplate first?

Also if you watched the vid, you need to take off the plastic top piece as well.

Can't have both on at the same time.

its the only one that came with the cpu heatsink so yes

i fixed the orignal problem just by pulling the screw up and moving to the side on the retention pate.
However when i try to put the retention plate on the heatsink it won't lock
HELP!!
