I'm upgrading my graphics card from a single 7970 to probably a high end 780 ti like msi gaming or evga superclocked/classified, or maybe a 290x. I have triple 1920x1200 monitors. I was considering crossfiring the 7970 with a 280x but I'm a bit scared off by reports of stutter or benchmarks not matching reality. I'd also rather not upgrade my ps (silver 760). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'll be using this mostly for gaming... no coin mining. CPU is OC 2500k for now.

Thanks!

I agree with shrimp, and be the first to tell you I am not an AMD GPU fan boy 9 times out of 10 I go with Nvidia but I think for this particular application a 290X is better suited.

First, the 780Ti and the 290x perform fairly similarly on paper...http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-290X-vs-GeForce-GTX-780-Ti The Ti definitly comes out a bit ahead but by no means destroys

Second, the 290X has more vram, a wider memory bus and is less expensive (even with the shortages) when compared to a Ti and that's what you need for higher res/multiple monitors.

+1 for R9 290X. And single card of this is only option for Your PSU. To CF 2x280X You would need >850W PSU. So go single 290X they perform better in Your situation, custom cooled of course.

@nashdes001 Not necessary the same, http://wccftech.com/amd-radeon-r9-280x-compatible-hd-7970-crossfire-mode-r9-270x-compatible-hd-7870-ghz/ But is assume it is because they based on the same chip-set.

@porkfried Check this vid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWnbEHMLRog) maybe You will get more info on CF.
