Problem with Drive letter assignments

After a clean install of Win 8.1 on a new SSD, now showing as drive C:, and plugging in a new 2TB HD I attempted to assign the new drive as D: but drive management will not show that letter. I have another drive that did HAVE that letter when I had Win Vista on this system, but it is unplugged now. -- Any thoughts on how I can get the former drive assignment letters released?

How clueless of me, of course I do! (head slap!)

Thanks, Alec. I just disabled the CD-ROM drive, changed the HD to D: and re-enabled the CD-ROM drive.
