Hi people,

I'm trying to set up a Linux server (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) and need to implement it in a network with machines primarily running Windows (Windows XP and 7).
From what I can understand, I need the software called Samba, is that correct? Where I'm getting really confused, is that I have also been told that I need to install SMBNetFS, which to be honest I'm not totally sure what is. So can anyone tell me how Samba and SMBNetFS are related, which are to be installed and in which order?

Thank you very much!

SMBNetFS automates the mounting of SAMBA shares. ie, you turn on your computer and can open a folder and there are all the windows shares ready to navigate. Not required but handy if you have the hardware to handle it, apparently it can slow the system down.

SMBNetFS is (possibly) useful if you are trying to access files shares on a Windows machine from Linux,,but irrelevant in your case where it is the other way round.

Just install Samba (if it is not already installed by default). You'll need to read the Samba documentation to set up your shares.

Thanks a lot to both of you, that clarified things quite a bit. If you are curious, the need of SMBNetFS is to make a backup drive on a Windows machine available to some software, so it's definitely needed.
Again, thanks a lot!
