Is it true that having an HDD even just for storage will still slowd own boot time?

I already have an 256gb SSD as a boot drive and I'm thinking of removing the HDD for the boot time and the extra airflow from not needing an HDD cage.

My only concern is how durable are external HDDs today compared to internal ones? I've had 2 external HDDs give out on me while my 250gb Caviar Green from 8 years ago is still alive and kicking.

Currently eyeing this external HDD for main storage drive.

I dont think it will make your pc boot up any faster. At least it shouldnt. As far as whether or not externals are stable. My mothers 1tb external has been chugging along for at least a year, possibly more. Just know that im pretty sure that removing the HDD to then hook up an external would not help you.

Lets say an HDD does slow down your boot times. An external HDD would also slow it down. So it really would not help you.

You might gain a second or two, as system will not need to check the drive during post, but you would loose this gain, if usb drive was connect during boot.

Running as an external, make sure caddy is USB3 as you will notice performance drop with USB2.

If your PC doesn't have USB3, get a plugin card for one of your pcie slots.

ssd's are fast already. i have an old ssd and my boot time is just a few seconds. i dont think removing mech drives will make a difference.
besides, you are planning to install games on an external drive? you want to gain some speed while adding clutter outside your case? just saying.
