  1. You have an old mainboard, but that does not matter. Any modern SATA HDD will work (even though your mainboard may not be able to utilize its maximum SATA 3.0 speed mode). So just buy a HDD of your liking with respect to your purse and size preferences. Just make sure it is a SATA HDD of the same physical dimensions as your old one (usually 3.5" for desktop drives).

Price per GB is currently lowest for 3TB drives, but you may want to save money and buy a smaller drive. Depending on your Windows version there may be a problem with drives greater than 2 TB, at least if you plan on booting from it. For such large drives, you need an x64 version of Windows and install in UEFI mode. If you want to avoid any such problems, stick with a 2 TB (or smaller) drive.
  2. Any 7200RPM SATA HDD (5400RPM is slower for about the same price). As above, stick with <=2TB for a boot drive. Your motherboard probably can't do EFI.

If you want to splurge, you could get an SSD. Or use both (OS/programs on SSD, data on HDD).

  4. A matter of personal preference and price. I would get the Barracuda, but you will probably hear other recommendations following my reply.
  5. I have the Seagate ST1000DM003 in my system and it has been an excellent performer! Low price, quiet, reliable and VERY fast! Highly recommended!

Barracuda, Desktop, or Blue. Green/AV-GP are 5400RPM drives, and slower.

Cheapest 7200RPM drive of the capacity you want.
