My current specs:

Amd Phenom ii x4 955 - stable OC at 3.8mhz @ 1.425
HIS R9 290 - OC'd to 1000mhz core & 1300 memory, no voltage change
Asus m5a97 evo r2.0
Kingston Hyperx blue 2x4gb - running at 1600mhz @ 11-11-11-28

Hi everyone,

So my current system is stable at with the current specs and settings above in both prime95 and games. My problem occurs when I try to up my cpu overclock. I increased the cpu to 3.9 mhz with the same voltages and it remains stable through Prime95 testing.

The problem comes when I try to game. All games constantly crash after a few minutes. I know it's a cpu issue because I was experiencing this same issue before and after having all my hardware checked and everything other test I could think of, setting back the cpu voltages and overclock let everything run stable.

So my question is what is it exactly that is causing the games to crash although the cpu is prime95 stable? Bumping up the cpu to 3.9 does increase the ram speed to 1666 mhz, not sure if that is an issue though.

The core voltage is currently at 1.425, the cpu/nb is at 1.2, and the NB is at 1.125 (I believe that's the one, I'm not looking at the bios right now). Would adjusting the voltages help? If so, which ones should I try first?

Thanks for the help in advance!

It is probably your RAM running at 1666 that is causing the issue, try reducing the ram speed and test it again.

So I tried lowering the ram to the next available setting which was 1300 mhz, but that didn't do it. Actually cause strange artifacting in game. I didn't mention that my temps are all very good, so that isn't the issue. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the voltages, just not sure where I should start.

with what voltage are you running your ram?
I guess 1.5V, because that's the default voltage of the JEDEC standard for 1333MHz.
Look up the timings-table of your specific ram, I'm pretty sure more voltage is required to run your RAM at 1600MHz.

how are your overclocking by the way?
have you increased the bus speed (front side bus) or the multiplier?
if you have a black edition phenom, I would increase the multiplier and let the FSB to default (200), therefore your RAM, HT-Link, NB, etc. stays at standard.
