I got a new acer aspire v7 but I can't play dota 2 or strife without suffering from lag spikes in game. My v7 handles the performance aspects well, it just seems that my connection through wifi isnt that good. Trouble is my download speeds are normal and youtube loads normally too, so I do not know if it's a connection problem

More about : lag spikes gaming acer

Are you using a wireless or wired connection?
And what kind of Router do you have?
And where do you live, that can affect online games alot.

I am using a wireless connection, have a 2wire 2701HGV-E router, and I stay in Singapore. I'm also pretty sure it isn't lag due to my computer not being fast enough, as I can move my mouse when the lag spikes happen. More like it's my ping keeps fluctuating up and down. Thanks anyway.

If you can, try using a wired connection for a game or two and see if that has any effect on your connection. If it improves it means there is some problem with your wireless connectivity.
Since you're in Singapore, I assume/hope you're actually playing on servers that are actually located in China right?
There may be some things you can do to improve your routers performance: http://byon.wordpress.com/2009/12/27/improving-performa...
Might want to try some specific Singaporean DOTA2 forums as well for ways to improve your connection with the game, things like port forwarding and such.

I tried a ping -t to google.com and it shows that most of the time ping stays around 56ms, but every minute or so the ping would go up to 200 - 400 ms. I did a ping -t simultaneously with my old computer and it didn't fluctuate that much. Also on my new computer when the ping went up to 300ms, on my old computer the ping was steady at 60ms. Is it a problem with my computer? I tried to go control panel then to network and sharing options and click diagnose, it said there was a problem that was fixed. I tried downloading the latest update to the wireless driver, the ping still fluctuates.

It's possible your new computer/wireless adapter isnt very good, or that your OS doesnt work so great with it.

Are you using windows 8?
that link mentions that there are two different types of drivers on acers website for your laptops wifi depending on how W8 was installed.

Yeah I downloaded the drivers for windows 8.1 from the acer support site, I also tried downloading from the intel website as my wireless adaptor is a Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260. Nothing seems to work.

Well, it could very well be that your ISP is just bad.

I have gone to speedtest.net, and tried using my ISP's own speed test, and the results are apparently normal. Low ping, as-advertised download speed. I have sent my laptop for repair, but they only did a software reset and claimed that there was nothing faulty.

It's possible there is radio frequency interference (RFI) causing this, which there is little you can do about, as it's generated by anything that generates electricity and could be coming from the power lines running near your house or anyone else using a wifi, ect.

The simplest and best solution would be to run an ethernet cable through your house and up to your computer, even if it's not pretty.
