Few questions on cpu coolers for fx-6300/8320

Hello, first let me say i am in the process of obtaining parts for my build. I currently have an NZXT Phantom case with an Asus R9 270X. That's it.

I am leaning toward the fx-8320, but will go with the 6300 if i have to according to my budget(let's not worry about budget right now, let's pretend it doesn't exist)

I am leaning toward the Noctua nh-d14. I want to OC in the future, but maybe only into the low 4's(but don't want to limit myself either.). I also want my computer to be very quiet. How does the Asus card that i have compare to the noise of this cooler? Will my GPU defeat the purpose of going with such a high end quiet cooler?

I have already looked at so many reviews and benchmarks but with the question i have i am finding it difficult to draw my own conclusion.

My next question: My boyfriend will also be building a new rig after i complete mine(he already has one, i don't, so we are doing mine first) He also is thinking of going with AMD cpu, but doesn't want to OC(i plan to convince him differently in the future, after he sees me do it...so i'm not gonna try to sway him to intel) He will probably end with the same GPU or a regular 270. The thing is, i want his PC to be as quiet as mine will be. No sense in me getting a quiet rig if his will sound like a jet engine. But he doesn't want to spend the money on an aftermarket cooler for himself.
So i plan to buy one for him without him knowing. Leaning towards the hyper 212, but i want it to be quiet.

TL;DR I need two cpu coolers, both for the fx line. 6300/8320 Both to be quiet, but not to be defeated by the asus r9 270x.(meaning i don't want to spend $80 on a cooler just to have the GPU sound obnoxious...i want balance)

Solution
I think you have everything covered, and by the parts you want to pick, I can see that you already understand the best option from reading all those reviews... I think what you are looking for is simple encouragement... that noctua nh-d14 is super quiet through and through... and asus makes the most quiet (if not the most silent) video cards... with what you have picked, it will be very silent, when running games it will pump up, but still will be hard to hear unless you are specifically listening to it.

another advice though. if you decide to go for fx 8320, I would advice to go with a decent water cooling like that which nzxt makes (and then fit it with the noctua fans, if nzxt wont be quiet enough). The thing is amd is hot as it is...

Get two Hyper 212's. But if you want to spend more on your build, step-up to a closed loop liquid. Like the H80/100 or competing product. A D14 is just too big, heavy and ugly. Honesty, it will block your whole board and add too much weight on the CPU cooling sink holes.

Get silent fans, perhaps CoolerMaster SI2's. I'm running several of them on my rad/case, no bling(LED's) & my system is dam quiet.

Also the future for AMD is FM2+, AM3+ is dead. Why would you want a CPU from Oct/2012, that was weak even at launch? Sure AMD needs sales, but the $200 is your money.

I'd sacrifice to get a decent Asus board, on LGA 1150. The Z87-pro for $200 would be great, but I'd settle for the Z87-A ($150). Even with a base i3; you can always upgrade to a 4770K later on. Intel builds are long lived. Say you had a 2500K today, upgrading would be questionable, "will I even notice"... But the board is vital, over time you could have thousands of dollars worth of software "tied" to it, from Windows 7 to Office, to Acrobat pro, ect...

JJ representing Asus, is a wealth of knowledge:

The thing is amd is hot as it is, that 8320 is a beast which will be constantly demanding cooling, especialy ofercloaked (also meaning that the fan cooling will spin faster and hence noisier)...

you can also always get a water cooling for video card with nzxt and have a self picked silent fan, but I wont advice it for your parts, because theres no point... your's will be very silent.

and another part of noise is the case fans (which can make your pc sound like a jet, despite inner cooling). So you might wanna get noctua case fans...

so you actualy got everything covered, fx 6300 and nh-d14... and that asus card. I would've got that myself

Thank you all for the input. I appreciate it very much. I will stick with the d-14 or liquid for myself. For him, something noctua most likely, but definitely not the d-14. Which btw, i do not mind how big it is or how much mobo it covers. I have a big case, something needs to fill it :D

As for why AMD vs intel. Well, even though we are pretending budget doesn't exist, i do have one. I do not, however, want an i3. The lowest priced i5 is too expensive for what i want out of it. I plan for this cpu to last me at least 3 years. At least. Which is why i am leaning to the 8320, and the noctua is a cooler i can have for years to come, with a new set of brackets for free when i do finally upgrade again in the future. I want to OC it, and i want it to be more than 4 cores. 3 years down the road, we should know where AMD plans to go next. The roadmap shows FX through 2015(maybe 14) so, they may make even small improvements to the series in that time(like lower the wattage of the fx-9590, make it more OCable) Who knows. Maybe someone here does, but for right now, i am sticking with the FX. If they do in fact give up completely on enthusiast cpus, i will switch to Intel, of course.

Thank you all again for your input. Sometimes we just need a little reassurance on our parts that we buy seeing as they should last us a few years.

you seem like a person who had amd die upon him... I have the same attitude towards laptops, having my back cranked a bit by one. and want to throw my current one out the window too.

theres nothing wrong with the build... the cpu is good, heck people use intels sandy bridge aswell and it is more than a year old... and to look at intel OC cpus, we are looking at a +30-50$ mobo price, and then the +100-200$ cpu price

ha, I saw that review too :)
yeaaaah yeaaah, the cheap old amd entry lvl... but it is multi core and OCable... and she did say she wants to OC at least to 4Ghz... then it will work a bit better

the thing is, we all are poor... I will go for amd for my build too, and as much as I want the 300$ i7 with OC I simmply cannot get it

I did actually see that review, but do not want the i3, and the cheapest i5 is 180 and that is for a P. The intel mobos also seem to be a bit pricier. I could be wrong on that and just not looked hard enough.

I know i know, then why oh why am i getting an expensive cooler? I want it to run cool, i want it to run quiet, and when i decide it is time to upgrade, i want to OC.

Hey vixl2ds, i am a guy actually :p haha

you can get a i5 3470 non overclockable for like 140-150 and sandy bridge i5 2400 around the same price, i5 intels are pretty stout, but if you want AMD the 8320 will be fine. If you don't want a huge cooler, Noctua made one called the U14s

sites even had it beating the older bigger "better" nh-d14, I did some research on it myself and they say it has a better internal heatpipe design so it cools just as well pretty much while taking up much less space.

I have the hyper 212 evo with 2 black cougar vortex fans in push pull and I never hear my pc..the case fans are probably louder. If anything I hear a faint whisper from the case , the stock intel heatsink sucked, it was more loud than a leafblower while gaming lol.

Thanks for the input WhiteSnake91. Those vortexs do look nice. I may have to consider that. The d14 is still my first choice as of this moment, but i have a little bit of time before i need to make my final decision. Although like i said too, i want to buy my boyfriend one so i just might go with that setup for him. 212 and a vortex or 2.

I was reading as I'm interested in the answer for myself. One thought I had is that DDR4 should be with us over the next 12 months and will make any new MB seem like yesterdays news. How much can you save if you spend the minimum on the CPUI/MBN combo to last you 12 months? e.g. 6300/970 MB/hyper 212 vs 8320/990fx/Noctura (or intel equivalents). My guess is you can buy the former for less than half the price of the latter

it all depends on what you're trying to do. Ram speed doesn't matter at all for gaming. Supposedly it does for stuff like Photoshop but that's beyond my knowledge as all I do is Game/stream on my gaming pc. I read awhile back that ddr4 is going to start off at 2133mhz, which ram now already matches that speed and g skill 2133mhz memory is pretty affordable even after ram prices shot up...8gb 2133mhz is about 72bucks on newegg last I checked. Still wish 8gb was 39bucks like when I bought mine in Dec 2012 though.
