My system works great with the SSD on a sata 2 cable, windows wont load with a sata 3 cable.

Asus P6X58D
I7 - 960, 24 gigs ram
ADATA SX900 256gb SSD, AHCI mode
Win7 Ultimate
Latest drivers and bios

Everything works great with a sata 2 cable, 3 gb/s, and i get over 300Mb/s max transfer rate. I have tried several sata 3 cables, 6 gb/s, and windows hangs with each of them. Sometimes wont even get to the "Windows Loading" text. I do have another non ssd sata drive with linix on it, on the same controler hooked up with a sata 2 cable. But the SSD drive is the first in the boot sequence.
Thanks for any info.

Might be a bad cable. But...
The cable has no bearing on whether or not you will run at SATA II or SATA III. On your MB you will have to use the (gray) Marvel headers. But first you will need to load the Marvel driver for those headers and enable them in BIOS.

I am using the gray headers, the marvel drivers were loaded. The bios was updated and ahci enabled on the marvel controller.
I unplugged the cable to the other drive and the SSD booted to windows. The new cables are OKGear OK4311 and for some reason did not like working with the cable that came with this used computer. I installed a second one of those OKGear cables on the other hard drive and that worked too. But like you said I still get the same transfer rate with the old or new cables installed. Max transfer rate of 311 MB/sec per HD Tune 2.55. I have read that they should get 450 MB/sec, maybe i need a new benchmark program. Thanks.
