I bought a GFX card a MSI R9 280X as my old card needed updating - card arrived this morning and let me tell you I'm seriously pissed.

Firstly I did everything correctly and uninstalled the nvidia drivers plugged in the new card connected the 6pin + 8pin (with adaptor) to the R9 280x booted up expecting to simply login to windows install drivers and that would be the end of it.

Transpires that when I powered on the machine I just had a black screen. PC beeped loaded windows as the windows sound played and I could also login to windows (blind) and it seemed windows was working but just a black screen. Changed the PIN connections around etc tried changing the bios on the card from Hybrid to Legacy - rest cmos etc. Oh and I have to mention I've got well had a 700W PSU.

Anyway I went to the local computer store (they are known to rip people off). I explained my situation and took my GFX card with me. The guy tested it in the backroom said it was fine and is loading windows and asking for drivers and then sold me a 1050W PSU for £130

Now I've come back home rewired the entire machine expecting to use this stupid card considering I've just spent more $$$ and I get the same shyte a black 'kin screen!!

I'm seriously pissed and I didn't want to build a new machine I just wanted to upgrade my GFX card.

I have a M3N78 PRO with a newly installed 1050W PSU
Phenom II 965 Black Edition 3.4GHz

What the hell did I miss here? I'm now £400 short with a R9 280X sitting in it's box and a 1050W PSU which I didn't even need to purchase I don't think the 700W would have been fine and Ive been told I cannot return it so I'm in the same position as I was this morning. I've spent the entire day sorting this out missed appointments etc because of this and I've reverted to my old card so I can at least use my machine.

I'm seriously annoyed and was wondering if someone had any ideas as I'm thinking of testing the gfx card in my friends PC and if it works I'll have no choice but to do my balls and purchase a new Motherboard, CPU , RAM and hard disk and reinstall windows. Stressed out....

Seriously I did not want to go down this route but what can I do..

I've trawled through forums already but I thought I have to post as I'm going nuts and I've run out of options.

The only thing I can think of is that this card is not compatible with my motherboard. I know it's PCIe 2.0 but so what should still work.

I either return the card and get £250 back for it which I paid a few days ago and somehow get refunded on the clear robbery which took place today with the PSU (its not even modular - boy am i vexed) or i bite the bullet and push forward and upgrade my machine completely.

However, there are no probs with my setup my system is rapid only games let me down and I don't have DX11.

Shame eh and my heart goes out to anyone who has had to go through this bulls***. I was on the verge of throwing the computer out the window earlier.

Peace
-KC

Yes, some newer cards won't work with some older boards without a BIOS update (the problem is that motherboard manufacturers don't support anymore old boards).
Try updating the BIOS on the motherboard, if newer version available. If still the same, try contacting ASUS and see if they can help.

Hey thanks for replying alexoiu - I already upgraded the MB bios to support the CPU I installed so I think I'm stumped. However, it is a good idea to contact ASUS and see what they have to say about it. I've read somewhere though that this MB is supported or maybe it was misinformation.

Thanks though for taking the time to read and reply :) appreciated

This is what ASUS came back no much help but their response nevertheless:

Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service.
My name is john and it is my pleasure to help you with your problem.

This should be a compatible however, this motherboard has been eol for a longtime and there is no update with this motherboard thus I suggest use the old module vga card for further test.
Hope you could understand.

It was an EZcool 700W (ATX-700 JPS).

Anyway I've sent everything back including the PSU I told them I wanted my money back or we would fall out! GFX card has been sent back also for a full refund minus shipping costs.

I'm outta pocket around £50 but I'm happy. I tried and failed. It weren't the PSU anyway my silly motherboard won't take the card which is strange and as you can see not much support from ASUS.

I'm going to have to build a new machine but I'm in no rush as my machine is OK just doesn't run the high-end demanding games.

Peace

Im just curious, what type of connection were you using from the GPU to the monitor? Also, I assume that you connected the monitor to the card, not the mobo, right?

I`m asking because the first time I got my GPU, I forgot to move the cable :))

I tried the HDMI & DVI (adapter) connectors on the back of the GFX card and I also tried using MOBO on-board HDMI whilst card connected. Nothing. Even went into BIOS and had a look to see if I could force the BIOS to use the GFX card only but the option in BIOS can only be set to Auto or On-board so left it as Auto.

Trust me I tried everything and hence why I've returned all hardware :)

Just until I build a new rig but I'm short of funds so it's not that important at the moment.
