ASUS Custom PC is irregularly freezing (Requires hard reboot)

Hey Guys!

I've purchased components and built my first custom PC after a lot of reading manuals, watching videos and advice from friends. The computer runs great! Apart from one bad problem...

Recently, about 2 weeks after building, the system has been freezing and requires a hard reboot to get it running again.

But then something strange happened today, it crashed in the BIOS! That can't be a good sign at all... I'm unsure as to what it could be but I have a feeling it is the PSU or Motherboard - I don't want to go buying anything else without help though.

Here are the PC's specifications;
Intel i7 4770k CPU
ASUS Maximus VI Mobo
ASUS AMD Radeon HD7970 3GB GPU
Corsair AX850 PSU
16GB Corsair Vengeance RAM

What I've done already which hasn't fixed it:

Reformatted & fresh install
Disconnected drives
Used different HDD/SSDs
Updated BIOS
Updated HDD firmware
Updated Graphics Drivers
Ran memtest86 for 24 hours
Disconnected GPU (running on on-board graphics)
Checked event viewer

After doing all that it only leaves two things as the RAM, HDDs, GPU, etc. seem to not affect it in any way at all. So I have a feeling it is either the motherboard or the PSU...

Nothing shows any errors or solves it so I'd be very very grateful if you guys could help!? :??:

Thanks a lot.

I had a problem similar to this with my first build several months ago. It turned out the problem was with my hard drive. I had installed my OS on an SSD and it would always freeze up - yes, before booting, also. Do you regularly have to do hard drive checks? Windows would try to do that for me and it said it was "fixed", although it never really was. I switched my OS over to my HDD and I never have had problems since.

I don't know for sure if this is the problem, but that was it for me. So, if you have a spare hard drive (or know anyone who does), try using that and see if it fixes your problems.

Thanks for the reply! Yup, I've tested this on another SSD as well as a HDD and the problem persists. Also, seeing as it crashed in the BIOS, I wouldn't have thought that it could be the harddrives, but I'm still a newbie at all this.

Thinking about it now, it really could be the PSU though. Chances are it isn't getting enough power. Do you have another system that you could switch them out to see if it solves the problem?

Nope, that's the problem. I can't really test it because I don't have another system to test it on... I would have thought an 850W PSU would be able to supply the power as I'm not running anything particularly power hungry. Plus, Corsair seemed to be a pretty high quality company.

In situations like these, it is really nice to have a similar system build (either a friend's or yours). That way you can switch out parts and narrow down what is causing the problem. I am actually doing that later tonight with a friend's build because I know it is either his processor or motherboard that is bad.

Ah, that's very interesting actually! Helps a lot.
After you mentioned it, I was looking at these PSU testers.

Perhaps I should get one and test my PSU then.
Are there any cases that it won't show any issues?

I'm really dreading to think it is the motherboard and I will have to replace it... oh gosh.
