Hello there! I am going to upgrade my graphics card in my gaming system. I currently have a XFX 7950, which is not giving me satisfactory performance. I have 3 choices to upgrade:

1) A GTX770 with aftermarket cooler
2) A R9 280x with aftermarket cooler
3) A R9 290 with the reference cooler

Here are my system specs:

AMD FX6300 @4.2GHz
Gigabyte GA 970A DS3
8GB Kingston HyperX Flu 1600MHz
Corsair CX750M
Antec GX700 Case
Windows 8.1
Either a gtx770, r9 280x or r9 290

I play at 1080p. I play demanding games such as Battlefield 4, GTA V and other titles.

Which one would be best for me??

Thanks!

Performance wise, the 290 no doubt. However, if you don't want to deal with the loud noise and heat problem, I would go with the 770. Although 770 and 280x are equal par cards, 770 has bit higher performance.

Actually! Why not grab the 780? Highest performance out of these three and similar price to the 290.

I must fully agree with this statement except for the these 3, where you are now the 770 isn't going to be the jump you are clearly wanting neither is the 280x.

BUT maybe look at a cpu upgrade before you move on to bigger and better gpu's

get an 8350/20 and overclock that as far as you can. Frankly you can count on large gains by doing this as apposed to upgrading the gpu. A lot of games now like the extra cores.

If you insist on the GPU route look at the 780 it performs around the 290 but at least 100 dollars cheaper and no heat issues yes I know the 290 is better with a aftermarket cooler but that puts it at 150 dollars or more than the 780. the 290 isn't worth 150 dollars more than the 780.

I just upgraded the CPU from a Athlon II x4. In my country (UK), the R9 290 is £309.99 and the GTX780 is around £420, which is too much. The R9 is actually cheaper but has a reference heatsink, but my case has 6 fans, so should be fine.

My budget at max is around £300.

Thanks.

DAMN! Clearly get a 290 but the stock cooling sadly causes the card to throttle.

The performance of 770/280x is no real upgrade from a hd7950... How much is the sapphire tri-x 290 in the UK?

The MSI R9 290 Gaming Edition costs £356.56 - Which is a lot more expensive than the reference cooler - Over £50 more!

Saving the money until you can afford the 290s and overclock the 7950 to 7970/280x level is probably the best thing you can do IMHO :D
