Computer randomly freezing then the screen turns to black. What could be the issue?

My HP Windows 7 computer is about 6 years old. Recently it has been freezing then the screen turns to black. Then has to be rebooted.

This could be a sign of some essential PC component dying or that you haven't cleaned your PC is a long while and a lot of dust is causing excessive heat after continuous usage which forces a freeze and reboot.

This could also happen if you recently installed some new hardware or a new driver. In which case i would re-install stuff.
