CPU reaching 200ºC (412º F)

Hello all, I just made an account here because I think this forum is very useful and I didn't found anything on the web relating to my problem, some people has this kind of temperatures but the problem is that the PC slows down (when playing game)

Here are my PC specs:
CPU: AMD FX6100 (stock cooler) with clock at 3,3GHz (Standard)
Motherboard: MSI 760GM-P21
GPU: Saphire Radeon 7850 2GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Sorry about the PSU, forgot the exact model but it was Coolermaster and the wattage was enough for this configuration.

So... here is the problem:

When I play games (some games doesn't make this) my CPU reaches 206º C and the temperatures start frozen at that point until I minimize or close the game. I tested the temperatures with Speedfan, HWMonitor, and the own AMD program, AMD OverDrive. All of them give the same temperatures. A peak of 206ºC (400ºF)

I had this problem before and what I did was send the PC to the technic to clean it (Yes, I am lazy to do it and I lack of the correct equipment), after it the PC ran nice with no problems, but a week after the same happened, I went to the BIOS and dissabled ''Cool N' Quiet'' because I tought that the sensor was broken and CPU slowed itself, problem fixed for 4 months until now :(. The same is happening right now and with Cool N' Quiet disabled, tried doing some bunch of stuff at the BIOS, alternating configurations with Cool N' Quiet and Turbocore, no results this time.

I must say the the computer is totally clean inside, the temperatures makes no sence, the CPU would already died if those were real, but why the games slow down? There is something going wrong with my CPU and I don't know what. I don't care about the sensor thing but atleast I want my games to run fine even if the sensor read wrong temperatures as 206ºC and 118ºC.

Thanks and I hope you help me to fix this. :)

Solution
You want to wipe it (both cpu heat spreader and cooler heat sink) with a lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol (90% or above, easily available at the local pharmacy) until they are both clean and then apply some fresh paste. The cpu gets slower (throttling) as it approaches its max temperature so that it doesnt overheat (or at least tries to). If it reaches that max safe operating temperature it should shut itself down to prevent nasty things from happening

I must add that all this started back ago when I updated the BIOS with Live Update 5 (I know wrong thing to do) and then it asked me to load the default setup. Is there a way to get the correct setup for this CPU? or rollback to a previous BIOS version? :??:

I don't think it is heating problem but tomorrow I will try to place the cooler and heathsink again.

Indeed, it looks like broken sensor but why the games slow down when this happen? Even with Cool N' Quiet disabled. There must be something wrong.

It may seem like that, weird thing is that the program stays with 206º C all time with the games open.

Had this like on August, I sent it to cleaning, the problem came back in 1 or 2 weeks, I fixed it turing off Cool N Quiet but soon from one day to another it happens again.

Bad thing is that warranty is over.

I will actually try to flash the bios with the old one.
The fan thing really confuses me, I have 2 external fans on the case which I have them at 100% to ensure cooling.

I saw that thread googling this problem, it's exactly the same but there is something with the CPU to slow down when this happens. I totally get it is sensor problem, if the temperatures were real I won't be typing this :wahoo:

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1953516/amd-4170-200c.html here is another one, same motherboard and same CPU manufacturer, also it is from december 2013, maybe it has to do with bios version?

Maybe its abit crazy idea but u should scan for viruses maybe they cause it to be slow, keep an eye on the task manager when u play a game if its 100% maybe its just its limitation or viruses using it up if it wasnt at 100% it should be something with the heat or ram usage, also try changing the bios that's all I can help with im sorry but im sure someone else will help you more

Try the following (which is pretty much a summary of the suggestions provided by everyone here):

1. Check to make sure your cooler is properly installed. (If you have a fan, make sure it's spinning and is connected to the correct FAN jumpers on the motherboard)
2. Check you have enough thermal paste between the CPU and the cooler.
3. Reset your BIOS to original settings
4. About the fans configuration, you'll want the push/pull config for best cooling results, check out this article by TH: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/cooling-airflow-heatsink,3053.html (lots of useful information there)

Hope the above helps you! :)

The CPU usage never reaches 100%, I tought myself about some malware but nothing of that.

Thanks for the summary of suggestions.Tomorrow I will try to check the cooler and heatsink, also I will try to flash back to the old bios I had, the cooling seems fine, the GPU reaches some high temperatures aswell but nothing risk as far for my knowledge.

did you flash the bios of the flash drive on the motherboard
