Dell Dimension 4700 Pentium 4 Upgrade

I plan on getting the Dimension 4700 for free from my church. It will be used to run a (home) server at my house. However, I feel like getting a better CPU, for general reasons. A Pentium 520 2.8 Ghz is just too awful. I would also upgrade RAM and create a RAID system, if possible.

I want to upgrade to Pentium 662 to take advantage of the higher clock speeds and 64-bit. However, is the BIOS compatible? Also, please compare the specs of both processors.

Problem is with those OEM builds that you really never know...You can look at when the CPU you had was released and see if there is any models that hold the higher end CPU but it's all a gamble...
best bet is to call the manufacturer and ask. But they are never too keen on people adding components to OEM builds and always say we do not hold support for that type of upgrade.

First you must have the latest BIOS 10 installed.

Having said that I was running Windows 7 32 bit at the time of the swap with all updates currently installed.

Took out the old CPU properly installed (Meaning cleaning everything actually reversed the fan because it comes blowing hot air into the PC rather than blowing out, cleaned the CPU the bottom of the heat sink, applied new high quality heat transfer past etc.) and the new P4 670.

Turned on the PC and it booted right into Windows 7 32 bit.

I then did a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit along with installing all 64 bit software this time and it all runs beautifully

BTW: Ordered the Pentium 4 from Star Micro in California $16.99. It came in a few days as a PULL from China. What else is new. I also upgraded to 4 x 1GB pc6400 on Amazon $17.99. Total cost of upgrading everything $44.00.

This still has not made the Dell 4700 compatible with Windows 10 and with the new equipment and the NX bit turned on in the A10 BIOS I thought it might. Still working on it though.
