hello, I was wondering if it was possible to take the hard drive im using now and put it into a new computer I will build in a few weeks.

Will I need to buy windows again? or do I have to do anything to the hard drive?

Is Windows a version you installed or one that was pre-installed by an OEM (i.e. Dell, HP)?

If you bought it, you can probably transfer the HDD and just reinstall Windows. It is highly recommended to reinstall Windows when moving a HDD from one system to another.

If it was pre-installed, its non transferrable. You will need a new license for Windows.

No problem to use your Product Key in another PC then. Many have got away with just dropping the drive into the new machine, Win 8 pretty good at adapting to new environments. Be prepared to check Device Manager for missing drivers, though, look for yellow exclamation marks.....and you'll need to re-activate windows using the automated telephone service...

Windows key plus R
type slui.exe 4 then enter to find your local M'soft number

Shouldn't have a problem. Just backup your files and do the reinstall once transplanted.

Did you buy an upgrade, OEM or Retail copy. If you bought OEM or upgrade, you might have to call Microsoft to activate after the install. No big deal though, they take you through a few steps or give ya a code and you're good to go.
