I currently have a Dell studio XPS 435mt with
2X seagate barracuda 320gb 7200.11 hard disc drives
in raid 0 configuration (done by dell)

This computer is about 6 years old and I'm afraid either drive could go any day and take out the other one

what is my best option for backing these things up?

I don't really know much about cloning or images

if I get 2 drives and clone each individual drive in my raid 0 config would that work for instant replacement?

are there any more other equally as convenient methods to creating a backup solution for this?

possibly some sort of single drive solution? I would think that wouldn't jive well with the raid 0 configuration

thanks

You don't need two drives, the system sees the RAID 0 setup as one drive, so if you clone it, you can restore the whole thing as long as RAID 0 is setup on the drive controller during restore.

You should also just copy your files to another drive for backup, you'd need to still install the operating system fresh and your programs, but your files will be safe.

I sure hope you were running backups already, especially using RAID 0.

Unfortunately I don't have a hard copy of the operating system. The only thing I have is a partition that came with my pc called recovery installed by dell. I've been lucky so far but thats why I'm starting to get nervous. I occasionally toss some files on my external but I'm not sure how to backup the operating system from the "recovery" partition. Can I call dell and get something sent to me ? Is there a way I can just copy the operating system from that partitioned recovery area? This pc is definitely no longer under warranty. Becausb of all this thats why I figured simplest solution is make exact clones of each drive and if it goes down stick both in the machine and call it a day

there should have been a utility for you to create your recovery disks. Yes you can contact dell and they will be happy to send you a set. I believe they still charge $10 to do so.

I'd be interested to know if their recovery actually works; I have yet t find one that can restore to a chipset level raid0 array.
