Hello,
Im currently wanting to upgrade from an old ati card to whatever the best ati/amd card is out there for a PCI-E 2.0 x16 slot on my motherboard... not familiar with nvidia unless you guys wanna help me understand why its better or not. im familiar with ati/amd so id feel safer with that choice. i did look at the HD6950 since its "top of the line" as far as what will fit into the slot.

i just want to know if im safe upgrading to this. i use my pc connected hdmi to my 3d sony 55" tv through my 7.1 audio system. i watch 3d movies as well as play alot of steam games. i currently have COD ghosts, tomb raider, and batman origins.

my issues atm are i can only play comfortably at high setting and would like to experience ultra or max settings, my problem is the FPS is junk on highest settings and if i try to mix and match settings sometimes tomb raider (for example) will crash.

my current set up is:

- asus pq5e motherboard
- intel quadcore Q660 2.4Ghz
- ati radeon hd 5750
- 8 gigs mushkin ram
- corsair 750w Power supply

(PS: unless i really HAVE TO... i do not wish to change any other part of my setup other than the video card. thanks)

i just want to know if upgrading to whatever card suggested (or the 6950 HD) will work, is worth it, and will cooperate in letting me view SOME max/ultra settings in current year games... at least with a decent/acceptable to play framerate.

thank you :)

Solution
PCIe 2.0x16 will not bottleneck any card out there.
So basically any card you get will work fine-from that point of view.
The processor however might.
So what is your budget?

A good price/performance card is gtx770

So i'd get that.

However, if you're particular on AMD cards, get the R9 280x It's also a great card.
Keep in mind that its performance is similar to the 770gtx but its price is inflated atm cause of data miners apparently.

A lower-end solution would be the 760gtx and the r9 270

Depends on your budget.

okie thanks. as ive mentioned i havent touched nvidia before and hopes that it will provide the same 3d bluray stereoscopic support as well as the high end gaming id like to try in its glory. i dont have a money limit on the cards... i just wanna be sure that all the cards are tolerable for my setup. thanks for ur suggestions =)

im sorry if this is a dumb question but... PCI-E 3 will work on a 2.0 board?

ive looked at both the high end and low ends and notice the obvious look alike model they follow of each other. does either or card on both the high and low end have any significant differences other than the chip brand? (nvidia vs amd)

R9 270x or GTX760 will run any game on high settings(low aa). Overclock ur cpu to around 3ghz then u will not notice any bottleneck. .I dont think u can play demanding games on ultra cz ur cpu will bottleneck the high end cards like 770/280x.

PCIe 3.0 cards are backwards compatible with pcie 2.0 boards.
The cards look alike because the producers, in this case gigabyte and MSI build cards using their custom cooling solutions and pcb's, but with processors from amd/nvidia.
And yes, the cards have differences beyond the chip inside them.

hmmm okies. thanks. so far both of you on the amd side say r9 270x is okie. ill keep that in my list... i see what you mean on price inflation too. wow. i will do some more research on the cards you both have suggested to me see what feels "safe" im not looking to melt my pc (i do have 5 fans and artic cooling so i think i might be okie..)

also ive never overclocked my cpu (afraid of messing up and burning something out.)

@sunder thanks
@raheel so dont bother with the 6950? outdated? (lol)

to both if i dont overclock... turn off AA on games but still wanna try out higher end options as far as texture qualities ect.. will the 270x still be okie to do? or should i down grade that to something my config will handle

When it comes to overclocking you should monitor your cpu temp and prefferably have aftermarket cpu cooling.
However, in your place i'd buy a card and see how happy i am with the performance before overclocking anything.

THe 6950 is slower and uses more power(generates more heat) than the r9 270x no point getting it unless it's for a bargain.

agreed. i may try the r9 270x (does it matter which brand i get? i see at least 4 companies making it). i did get arctic cooling for the cpu and a popular brand heatsink (sorry i forgot the name atm) and when i DID have software for temp checking i coulda swron it never went past 60*C. well.. the temp gauge never went in the red is what i mean

r9 270x discussion.
Overclocking will increase your core temp significantly-depending on how much you overvolt.
Stay below 75 c and you will be fine.
