Ok so I am a fairly casual gamer, I have started playing the COD series and I have been given COD Black Ops 2 on DVD from the missus. My current gaming PC is my old office PC with some upgrades.

The spec is:

Win 7 Pro 64 bit
500w PSU
Intel Core 2 Duo E8200 2.66ghz processor (Factory settings)
Stock fanless cooler
8GB Crucial generic DDR2 Ram
EVGA Nvidia GTX 650 1GB Gfx Card (Swapped for old phone cost nothing)
Standard HP M'board (no OC features in Bios)

I have found a place online that is currently selling a boxed as new E8400 processor (3ghz) for £30 and I just want to know is it worth paying the £30 for the extra 0.34ghz processing power or shall i just make do with what I have.

Assuming I stick with the gaming then i will build a new Gaming PC so don't want to spend a load of cash on this PC.

Basically I want to be able to play single player Black Ops 2 at medium settings on 1024x768 without any major lag. As I said I am not a major gamer and my COD warfare skills are questionable so having bleeding edge FPS is not a problem for me, I just want to kick back after a day's work with a beer and be able to shoot some terrorists in the face ! Can my current PC spec do that or is the £30 CPU upgrade going to be required ?

Thanks

Upgrading from E8200 to E8400 does not make any sense, the 200MHz extra will not bring anything.
If you plan to keep the rig due to budget issues, I would recommend to get a Q9xxx (best as second-handed onefrom ebay) and not any dual core procs.

The best solution is that you save your money from any kind of upgrade on the same LGA775 platform and start planning to make a huge overhaul and move to Ivy or Haswell platform.

Not worthy at all... you'll gain maybe 4-10fps which is practically unnoticeable, keep on with what you have until you buy yourself a new pc.

You could try however to OC your CPU using some software utilities, just google for some tutorial regarding software OC.

Thanks for the advise, I thought it might be a waste. I will keep truckin with what I have then when funds allow I will build something better probably based on a i5 with a couple of GFX Cards. Thanks

Try to find a Core2Quad for $50 or less. It'll make a huge difference in multi-tasking and overall performance of your office computer. I found my Core2Quad Q6600 for $50 on Craigslist. I was going to build a new Core i5 PC, but it would end up costing me at least $600+. The $50 CPU upgrade was worth it for me to keep the PC awhile longer. Just make sure your motherboard supports the Core2Quad if you decide to go that route.
