Your question

Low FPS, Low CPU Utilization, External Hardives don't work... PSU?

Hi all,

here are my specs:

So I have really bad FPS in games, example Arma 2: DaYZ - 14 FPS. Now why is this? Also external hardives don't work the one that rely off USB power. But when plugged into the mains and connected it works.

I'm thnking it could be down to my PSU.. it 500W unbranded and cost £13. Any other ideas?

Thanks

EDIT: Graphics card activity always very low too!

First, start a game in windowed mode (not full screen), then open the task manager and look for the CPU usage, if its above 90% then it might be bottlenecking the GPU, but its unlikely, still try it.

Second the GPU is somewhat weak for modern day games, so maybe that is the reason of low FPS.

Third it could be the PSU not providing enough power to run the GPU, though you GPU will never use more than 90W on load, but it needs a 6 pin PCI-E connector, do your PSU have it ? You can borrow a PSU to test.

And the drivers are upto date ?

CPU never seems to go over 50%.... On starting a game it's at 35%

Now I think the GPU should be alright it's fairly new with 2gb.

Now PSU I have ordered a new PSU unit which will come tomorrow.

Yes the CPU is not bottlenecking the GPU for sure. So you are fine with CPU and GPU combination. BTW your CPU usage is quite high, as the pic stated, do you know any reasons behind it ?

You can test your GPU on another PC just to make sure its not faulty.

And wait for the new PSU, install it when it arrives, see if there is a increase in performance, then you can reply. Good luck.

Thanks for helping me out, right. Received new PSU. I am now getting a constant speed. Ranging from 2.74 Ghz to 2.83.

Now I'm trying to play DAYZ but I'm still having lag, is this down to an old mobo or CPU?

I think its not the CPU or MB, its the GPU. As I said earlier your GPU is somewhat weak for modern day games. Try lowering the settings in-game, see what happens. You can totally turn-off AA (anti aliasing).

You can also test the GPU with benchmark test : http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/

BTW what is the make/model of your new PSU ?

PSU is this: Corsair Builder Series CXM 750W Modular 80 PLUS

Now I think I'll get an SSD and a 660. Good choice? CPU has been overclocked to 3.19 Ghz

Your PSU is in between good and bad, its a budget PSU so not the best, but I think it will do for you.

SSD has no impact on games, it will just load the map faster and nothing else. And if you are thinking of GTX 660 GPU then I will say don't go for that, cause I think your CPU will bottleneck the GPU, so you wont get benefit from that. Save your money to upgrade the CPU/MB/GPU. And try to down clock the CPU, to see if it performs better or not ! Good luck.
