I have a surfboard sbg6580 router/modem and i got a used linksys wap54g router. i would like to make the linksys into a repeater. No matter which way i set it up i cannot access the linksys. I can only access the surfboard. Ive tried all variations of ip addresses i can think of and even hard wiring the linksys to the computer. I wired the linksys directly to the surfboard and it works but not consistently, maybe they interfere with eachother? even though they are on different channels? ive also tried changing the ip address to access to surfboard but i think it changes both. ive also tried turning the wireless off on the surfboard and it still only accesses the surfboard through the linksys

can someone please write up a simple step by step process to get this going? thanks.

No you don't have to have all linksys, but of course Linksys will pretend that all routers and gear are linksys brand haha.

To get access to the access point, two things:
1) its in static IP mode, and you will have to guess out of 254 address (192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3..all the way to....192.168.1.254). On the article it mentioned 192.168.1.245 or 192.168.1.246, give that second one a shot.
2) Its in DHCP mode, and will appear on the client list on the surfboard. I would tell you how to see it but I've never used a surfboard router.

once you get access to the AP's config page, you can config it to be an repeater or a client bridge.

hmm. well i dont think i know enough about this stuff to get this done but one more question. I have the AP wired to the surfboard, I can get on the internet through either one but what i want to do is access the AP through the browser like i do with the surfboard. Can i do that or do i have to hardwire it to a computer and do a whole setup?...........why cant they just make this stuff user friendly? its really annoying

Alright I finally found the DHCP clients through the surfboard. What should I make the MAC address? And I guess I'll just make the ip for it one digit higher or lower than the ip on the surfboard which is 192.168.0.2

but what i want to do is access the AP through the browser like i do with the surfboard. -- I'm not quite sure what you mean. What do you mean by browser?

Good for finding the IP address. Go to the setup page and change the mode to Wireless Repeater. The MAC address you will enter is the WLAN MAC address of the surfboard.

I just noticed that in multiple places in the article it says it will only work as a wireless bridge with another WAP54g. That sounds kinda weird and Ive never heard of things like being product specific, but maybe.

You know in repeater mode, the network cable doesnt connect to a pc from the AP. You can just attach power and place it in between the surfboard and your wireless device.
