Today I cleaned out my pc of dust, re-applied cooling paste and put in a new graphics card. I dropped some arctic silver 5 in the cpu socket by accident which scared me half to hell, but I cleaned as best I could after panicking and continued putting everything back in place. Now I have booted the pc and the MemOk red light is on and my monitor receives no signal. I held the MemOk button until it flashed and re-booted, but it stays red aftdr doi lng it's check. I havent made any RAM changes, so do you think it is likely because of my accident with the CPU, the new graphics card or what? I have a p8p67 pro rev3.1 and installed a gigabyte 780ti. Let me know if anymore info needed.

We'll try to help you! From what you describe, it appears that the problem (whatever it is) is related to the thermal paste in the CPU socket. Depending on the severity of the mishap, you may have to re-install the CPU/heatsink after you do another careful and thorough cleaning. Can you post a picture of what you are describing?

For future reference, it is not necessary to take the heatsink off in order to clean the inside of the computer. A can of compressed air will work adequately.

Yeah, i took it off to replace thermal paste. I've replaced it a hundred times, but this time i got clumbsy :( I will send some pictures later as I have to go out, for now any recommendations on the best way to clean it? I know the pins are delicate.

To clean off old thermal compound from the CPU and heatsink (not the socket) I used alcohol swabs, Q-Tips, gun cleaning lint-free patches, and lots of patience. When I am cleaning the CPU, I hold it by the edges upside down so that no alcohol gets inside the case, 70% Isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) is available at Walmart for about $1 for a 12-ounces package. 91% Isopropyl alcohol is better if you can find it.

DO NOT insert any Q-Tips or other objects inside the socket where the delicate pins are.

I found this product at Arctic Silver's website: http://www.arcticsilver.com/arcticlean.htm

Mt recommendation: Take the motherboard out of the case and set it in a near vertical position securely; the motherboard should not slip or slide and create another problem. Then use a hypodermic syringe with a fine 29 to 31 gage needle to shoot the Isopropyl alcohol into the socket around the pins. Again do not touch the pins with anything. Repeat this process until all traces of the thermal compound is gone. Plenty of patience is required. When you get tired, stop, and pick it up the next day.

Good luck!
