I recently completed a build (List of components below) and thought I would test out my system using the latest version of 3D mark. I downloaded the demo version to trial then proceeding to 'run all tests'. The first test will then run for roughly 20-30 seconds before turning my pc off completely. During this test my pc will make a buzzing/whining noise throughout and will turn off at the exact same point every time. The only other time I encounter this problem is when trying to play 'war thunder'. It will make the same noise and occasionally turn my system off.

Amd FX 8350
ASUS M5A99X Evo R2.0 Motherboard
8gb Corsair Vengeance ram 1333
XFX R9 280X
EVGA supernova NEX750B PSU

Everything at stock
Thanks

The actual sound happens when you put graphics load on the R9 280x

It is a coil, or capacitor as part of the power phase of the graphics card board.
So that explains why it happens in 3D mark and a game.

There are a few reasons as to why the system may shut down.
The obvious is if a temperature of a device reaches critical.
Then to save it a system shut down will happen.

This can happen with the graphics card.
Or the Cpu.

In the bios of the board there can be conditions set.
Of when the system performs a shut down to do with how hot for example the cpu gets.
Or a a trigger temp.

So it may be the case it`s set too low.
In any case check the gpu temp and the cpu temp.
Use software to monitor them both while in windows, and running the tests.

And check in the bios what the cut off or system shut down value in C or F it may need to be adjusted higher to stop the system from powering off.

Thanks for the quick reply,
CPU and GPU temps during test and while playing games stay relatively low.
Where in my bios settings can I find the cpu/gpu temp cut off?
Also when playing games such as battlefield 4, crysis 2 etc on ultra settings which to my knowledge are much more demanding on my system why do I not experience these noises or system shut down?
Could it possibly be a problem with the 3d mark software or the game I mentioned?

Still having the same problem adding Sims 3 to the list of problem games, seems to me the shutdown happens when the coil whine kicks in which seems to be every time I play a game hitting rather high fps. As I said temps are fine and BIOS settings seem to be correct so I'm guessing its a GPU or PSU problem it's just trying to figure out which one, any advice?
