I am unhappy with how the hyper 212 Evo deals with overclocking. My temps are very high, yet i am only running at a 4.2ghz turbo boost. The temps i get in prime95 are around 80-85C. I want to know what better CPU coolers there are. I would like to be able to OC to around 4.2-4.5 ghz, with lower temps than 80.
Many thanks, Daniel

Solution
First and foremost, you shouldn't really keep running Prime95 until you set voltages properly.

I am guessing you are trying to overclock? There are two things that affect temperature - 1) Voltage, and 2) Clock speed.

80-85° is not abnormal for Ivy Bridge while running Prime95. My 3570K with CM 212 evo reached around mid 80s when running Prime 95 @ 4.3GHZ and 1.232 V.

You will probably have similar experiences, but as it currently stands, you are sending more voltage than neccesary to your CPU and I suggest you stop it.

Read some overclocking guides and learn to set voltages manually, then run Prime95 to make sure its stable.

Please read guides first and if you continue to have issues/concerns please post your Bios settings and...
What's the ambient temp of the room? Are you sure you applied the thermal paste correctly? Are you allowing the mobo to increase fan speed to keep up with load?

My 3570k with 212 Evo at 4.2 never breaks 70C under full load and the fan stays pretty darn quiet. My ambient air temp is roughly 22C/71F. Voltage regulation on the mobo is set to auto.

Ambient temp is around the same as yours. And the voltage... I actually don't 100% know for sure, as it jumps a little bit when using the turbo boost. most of the time in prime95, the voltage is at 1.232. I actually dont know how to properly change the clock speed and voltage in the bios, therefor it is all this turbo boost clock and turbo boost voltage nonsense. Anyhow, if you have any suggestions, they are very much appreciated

Hello Plumel,

It appears that you might have your CPU voltage on auto which can possibly cause higher temperatures. Overclockers will usually set the CPU vcore manually in bios but it's up to the overclocker to find the correct vcore for which ever multiplier they are trying to stabilize.

The Hyper 212 EVO is a great cooler for overclocking so you should be able to hit the above multipliers but it still depends on the chip and the voltage required to stabilize.

I would suggest looking at an overclocking guide for your motherboard to help you configure your bios setting.

Alright, thank you all so much for the responses! And great to see a rep on here :D
I have now read an overclocking guide for my motherboard and temps seem to be a little better, mid 70's now.
Thank you so much,
Daniel

FYI mid 80's during prime 95 translates into 30's during idle or light windows browsing, and 60°s during normal load/gaming. If your temps are higher than that please post here and I will try to help.
