Hey guys

im doing a gaming build and want you opinion on which build i should go for

1) I5 4440
gtx 760 OC gigabyte
z87x HD3
8 gig ram

OR

2)FX 8320
r9 280x
970
8 gig ram

from what i understand the AMD build is alot more powerful for gaming specially that mantle is coming out but i am afraid of the fact the the 280x is a non reference cooler and creates alot of heat...the intel build uses less powerful but more reliable than the AMD build.

please tell me which would you prefer and why

thanks

Solution
The AMD build will get you much better gaming performance, as well as better multi-core program performance, such as photo/video editing.

Non-reference coolers are ALWAYS cooler than reference ones, it's the reference coolers you want to avoid. And the 280x is fine with heat output.

Definitely go for the AMD build.

First off, I would not list mantle as a reason to get an AMD build, it is an untested API. It up to the developer to to utilize the API in order to reap any benefit from it.

Secondly, it is really personal preference and budget. dollar for dollar you are going to get more when you go with an AMD CPU but AMD does not have the reputation when compared to Intel in terms of overall performance. Also the defect rate is much higher for AMD.

Also AMD's higher end cards are really inflated right now due to coin mining, so you could actually invest in say a 770 if you decided to drop the 280X, regardless of the CPU you decided to get. A 770 is a bit better than a 280X

You could even save some money on the "Intel" build and grab i3 4130 or i5-3350P unless your really set on Haswell.

I think it is largely preference. I have owned both AMD and Intel build and while I have never had "problem" with an AMD CPU I prefer an Intel

DON'T BE SNOWED IN BY CONJECTURE. Until Mantel is out and actually hard INDEPENDENT tested, I would put this in the Duke Nuke'em Vaporware candidacy column.

The AMD setup is ON PAR to the Haswell Build, so both will be about the same gaming level actually (Haswell chipset changed the 'game' again and I am still WAITING *HELLOOOOOO AMD!!! Do you HEAR US!!* for some credible challenge to it as well of course a i7). The R9 or 760 are top performers, but going forward (because the coding of BF4, etc. uses as MANY cored as available) will be choked IN COMPARISON to the i7 in the same Intel rig your building (tested and the numbers are out there, besides ALL 'Video Card Reviews' are based on a i7 Core rig).

Now there been some serious offerings up there to undercut all the previous "i7 too expensive to spend for so little gain" nonsense I seen posted here, especially if your going TOP END Video Card. For example you can score this i7 Haswell Desktop for only $599 (http://slickdeals.net/f/6657778-lenovo-h530-desktop-pc-core-i7-4770-3-4ghz-haswell-8gb-ddr3-1tb-hdd-wifi-n-dvdrw-usb-3-hdmi-win-8-599-90-free-shipping-staples) then just swap PSU if needed and slam in the R9 or 760 and put the saved cash into say upgrading to 16GB if you want (I did and makes a big diff for me) and add a SSD as the C drive you would kick some butt while on the cheap.

Just something else to consider before you get swept up in all the 'promise' of better BF4 performance for the AMD CPUs. Personally if AMD could come out with their own Hyperthreadings on those same chips with the same costs, they would drive Intel to bankruptcy within a year, but that is the key to why Intel kicks but with it's iCore series.

[strike]Huh? the R9 280x is the type of R9 video card your getting, not the 'cooler' for the card:[/strike]
here is a example of a R9 280x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127759
as compared to this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150678
[strike]and see the '280x' doesnt' determine the 'cooler', it just determines the 'type' of R9 it is http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/r9/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-r9-series.aspx#1

You can get a R9 290, R9 280 or a R9 270, has nothing to do with reference or non reference 'cooler'. [/strike]

Sorry was not familiar with that new 'term', but the link images should help show it is a non-reference cooler. Personally I don't know why it would blow 'into the case' like that. I always seem some sort of vent system take ones like that and shoot it out the 'back' or best yet side of the case that had these sorts of cards in mind.
