I' thinking of either a 290x twin force MSI (£440) or a 780ti twin force MSI (£550)

Yes... Price point. Top of the line Nvidia currently outperforms AMD but usually comes with a heftier price tag. Gaming companies dont make much if any on their consoles so they try to produce them as cheap as possible and plan to make the big bucks off of you through purchasing games, Live, Netflix etc...

It is hard to predict the future but based off of history, Nvidia has always stayed 2 steps ahead of AMD. We are aproaching the point where we wont have room to add more transistors to a card or improve die sizes. At that point new, higher performance materials (ie: pure carbon) will have to be instituted for graphics processing to continue to progress. In other words, I think AMD will catch up to Nvidia in the current concept of video cards but Nvidia will be moving on to a complete new architecture than what we see on the market now.
