Hi everyone. I have a laptop Dell M6500 i7 CPU x940 2.13Ghz. 16 Gb RAM and 1Gb NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800M. The problem with this is that the screen shuts off, goes black. After I make a hard shut down of laptop and later I turn on again it works. I don't know why it happens.
Please someone help me.

What version of windows do you have?

In either windows 7 or 8, 8.1 you can try changing your power plan. Go to Control Panel, System and Security, Power Options, Edit Plan Settings. The goal is to save changes so that your screen stays on when plugged into the charger. If that doesn't work or you've already done that the please let us know about any other possible symptoms in more detail.

Okay, just had to make sure. How long before it shuts off? Does it happen all of the time after a certain time point or after you use certain programs ie video rendering or gaming? What have you noticed or can remember if you weren't really observing? Also, if you can remember, how hot is your laptop getting? Is it hot to the touch? Hard to gauge I know as laptops tend to run hot no matter what. Also are you using a laptop cooler?

@aldo z
When was the last time you updated your bios? How long have you had this laptop? Also, what about heat? You didn't answer any of those questions. Please do as the tiniest info left out can change everything!

@bomko
Same questions.

Sometimes with certain software when you install or update and your bios isn't designed to handle an aspect of that new software or update it can cause issues. The reason I ask for how long you've had it can help me determine some other issues like throttling from constant overheating of your chip or something else and the longer you've pushed the worse symptoms get. When a chip is new it may handle it better or something as small as dust filling your vents can overheat your system faster. I can go on but please guys please answer all questions and don't be afraid to be too detailed; let me filter out what I deem unnecessary so I can get you going faster!

The only thing with updating the bios is that in rare cases it can make things worse. So before proceeding please check if that has been the case with certain bios updates. For example, if you have a bios that is 5 generations old (5 new updates since yours) and the latest one has issues but the 4th one doesn't then obviously update to the 4th gen bios. Sometimes you aren't lucky enough to have others communicate such issues. It is reversible but takes some steps. So as stressful as you are already I just want you to be aware of this possibility. Also, based on some other info you share there may still be other solutions so please update me as soon as you can with all questions that were asked of you!

Thanks,

Justin S.

I bought this computer used, i don't know if Bios has been updated. I don't use a computer cooler. and yes it get hot. the cpu and motherboard temperature goes to 50 - 70 but it has not done this problem when it was 70 grade celsius. this thing can happen after 4 or 6 hours or even after 2 minutes. the cooler system of laptop is ok no dust in it but the fans run mos of the time.

well i bought new computer in october 2012. He is getting too hot to touch, but thats going on ever since i bought him and didnt put much attention to it since because ivre searched on the internet and saw that this was a common HP problem. Altho i still dont use a external cooler. I dont know exact number cause it wanst really hot lately.
I have the latest bios version since seventh october 2013 when was the last update.
Now the last time monitor went black i waited a bit (about a minute or so) and it shut down like it would go in the sleep mode or something. Because when i turned it back on it came on immediately with all programs still running. But the isnteresting thing is that computer was cold when theat happened.
And as far as i know i dont have any sleep modes or anyinthg like that turned one cause i double checked in my power plan and it is disabled. Because the other times that this has happend i just hard reset it straight away, but now i cant recreate this black screen no matter what i do to check if this would happen again after waiting a bit-

Sometimes even if you change the power settings your admin system settings can override them for some reasons. Here's another possible fix:
Run cmd (see pic below) as an Administrator. Click start, type cmd, RIGHT click and select "Run as administrator", click yes and type the following:
"powercfg.exe/hibernate off" without the quotes (see pic below):

You can always put this back by following the same steps above and instead type "powercfg.exe/hibernate on" without the quotes. Maybe something this quick will work. Please let me know.

Again, make sure you run this as ADMINISTRATOR. I really hope this helps!

Thanks,

Justin S.
