Hi, please feel free to redirect me somewhere else if there's already a thread about this, but I don't really know where to start on the issue. I'm about to get Time Warner Cable 50mbps plan, and I've determined that the Motorola SB6141 is the way to go modem-wise, but I'm having some trouble figuring out what router would be best for my situation.

My roomates and I are planning on having 2 desktops plugged into the router that are intended for gaming, 3 laptops, and 4 smartphones. Obviously we won't be using these all at once most of the time, but I don't know if I should go with a 802.11n or 802.11ac router. Only the desktops will really need fast speeds for gaming, but will going with an 802.11 router not be enough to maintain decent speed for all the wireless devices? We'd like to be able to stream to our Chromecast and stuff like that without it being too slow.

Thanks in advance, and sorry if this question has been answered before.

Your probably okay to stick with 802.11n your smartphones do not support ac most likely, and nor do your laptops. Since the standard is not yet widely adopted even if you had an ac access point you would still be operating at n speeds since your limited by the slower of the two. If your laptops are ac capable and you really want speed, too each their own but I wouldnt be able to justify the cost.
