Anything connected through your router would likely loose it's connection.

Your ISP assigns you one IP address(which can change if not static). Your router uses this as the gateway to your ISP. Your router will assign devices connected to it an internal IP address to identify them on your network and then route that traffic to your ISP via your router gateway address. You should use your ISP's recommended DNS servers for address resolutions.
what I am getting is a and b.resolvers.level3.net never heard of that before, googles open dns is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

it seems that this level 3 company is hosting out in CO?

I would download a program that scans a bunch of DNS providers and picks the best ones based on reliability and response time.

Looks like 4.2.2.1 might be a Microsoft DNS server located just outside of Wichita, Kansas.

I don't believe changing your DNS server will "improve" your connection. Most issues with connection speed occur within the last mile of a connection. This server just resolves a friendly host name to a machine readable IP address(www.google.com = 74.125.239.116) and has little to do with connection speed/quality.

Corporate HQ appears to be in CO while this server appears to be in KS.

The 4.2.2.2 ones are owned by level 3 and 8.8.8.8 ones are owned by google. The tricky thing they do is this is not just a single machine it is a whole bunch of machine that duplicate the IP address in a whole bunch of different cities. This is called anycast and it lets the routers choose the closest server. It mostly works but routers can't really tell distance it is only using the length of what is called he aspath.

What you need to do is ping a number of these and see which gives the best response. Most large cities have one or more of these located locally. Which is best can not be determined by asking someone since they may have different ISP and different paths to these servers.

What do you mean, moderate?

Port forwarding is always better because your device is still behind your firewall > more secure
Putting a device on the DMZ Host port puts the device outside your router/firewall & exposes it to all traffic > less secure

Google DNS benchmark. Download and install. Run Benchmark. Modify your router settings for the top 2-3. Wont matter for games so much but everyday browsing on your devices will be "snappier."
