Should i build cheaper amd for gaming with a more expensive gpu or an i5 based system with a lower band gpu? (Amd piledriver & r9 280x or i5 4670k & r9 270x with potential of adding a second 270x down the road) ? Got a budget around 500 max for mb cpu gpu ram & sshd

Thanks

Well, generally you should be spending more on your gpu then on cpu. So something like fx 8320 and r9 280x will set you up for quite a while.

Though i5 4670k will last MUCH longer in my oppinion, 270x is still able to run all games in 1080p for a while (though a lot of them not on ultra), the question is, if you mb and PSU can take crossfire later and if you like that solution

Also upgrading GPU is WAY easier then upgrading cpu obviously.. and you might be also able to sell the 270x and buy something better down the road

For some reason im drawn to the 4670k over the 8320 even though there is little difference in gaming performance as the GPU will be the bottleneck. That is a very good point about xfire upgrade too. I guess the cheaper cpu setup with a better gpu will give me a better over all experience for gaming. Is there much of a performance difference between the 8320 and the 6300?

Well, fx 8320/8350 with r9 280x is still a better choice than 4670k and r9 270x. fx 8350 is prettly much equall to 4670k so don't consider cpus here, but consider gpus. So r9 280x is a better option. Even if you plan on crossfiring r9 270x, I'd say get r9 280x now and then crossfire it even if you have to wait longer for it, as it will be better choice.

Well you can only tell difference between fx 8320 and fx 6300 on games like BF4 and Crysis 3 and some other 8 core optimised apps or games. Basically fx 8320 is nothing but two extra cores over fx 6300. In some games which use 2-4 cores even fx 6300 outperforms fx 8320, so that's because fx 6300 is clocked to 4 ghz and 8320 is clocked to 3.5 ghz. But in the future, fx 8320 will be much better than fx 6300 and really close to fx 8350. You can oc it to 4 ghz to get a fx 8350 like performance. The only differnce between 8320 and 8350 is clock speed, none more. (except 8350 is better for heavy oc like 4.9 ghz or more).

Thanks for all of your input guys. After reading a lot of stuff and benchmarks between the 270x and 280x i think the 4670k and z87 with a 270x seems to fit the bill. From the benchmarks i viewed in the majority of games at 1920x1080 there only seems to be a 15-20% difference in performance between the 270x and 280x which i dont believe justifies the 45-50% premium in money terms. Swapping out the 270 for a more powerful single gpu down the road seems like a more sound decision with a strong cpu/mainboard combo that has some longevity. Some of the single / 2 thread cpu benchs i looked at placed the i5 upto 45% faster than the 8350 piledriver which is huge considering there is only £20 - £30 difference between the two.

Thanks for all of your help :)

Glad that you found your solution :) and from a longer term point of view, I believe a very good one, since 4670k has a lot of reserves to offer later on. Don't forget to pick the Best Solution, so that it is marked as solved ;-)
