Can anyone help me figure out what happened to Windows XP Home Edition?

This is going to be a long one, sorry:
So I took a friend's computer to try and fix a few things. They complained of it being a little slow and taking a long time to respond to their commands. Knowing this person and how little they knew about computers, I figured it was some sort of virus. Upon inspection, I thought that I had found the problem was some sort of tool bar that had been installed and figured I would just remove it from the registry. I then ran a Malwarebytes Anti-Malware to get rid of anything that I missed. It came up with 168 files that were corrupt or missing. I didn't want to go through every one of them just to make sure that I wasn't getting rid of anything important, so I didn't (which is probably where this all started). Long story short, I have only made things worse over time and I need help! It is a fairly old computer running XP Home Edition. When I log in, the explorer.exe file has to be terminated and then restarted just to work. Then, when I hit the Start button, the only things there are the Documents, Pictures, Music, My Computer (which is just a folder now that says "Folder"), and the Control Panel (which also looks weird as it is just a folder icon as well). The all programs menu shows nothing and I'm just lost. Anyone have any suggestions?

P.S. - I don't have an XP disk to try to recover with. System Recovery doesn't work either, FYI.
